What service based jobs are we talking about here? Retail? Walmart and many other stores are putting in more of the self service checkouts all the time. They have a great ROI. It's only a matter of time before department store like JC Penney's and the like start using them en masse. Production continues to increase at a greater pace than domestic job creation. More and more people are working in part time jobs. After the economy recovers, the unemployment rate won't go down because of 40/week jobs that pay all the bills, it will be because of part time poverty level paying jobs that require people to depend more and more on social welfare services. The green energy movement will create a certain number of jobs, but not near enough to make a dent in the big picture.

Has Singularity Hub done a story on Seegrid Corp, co-founded by Hans Moravec? Their GT3 Tugger and GP8 Pallet Truck are two autonomous warehouse robots that are already in commercial use and doing great.

As robots become more common, questions arise about how they will be controlled from the perspective of social accountability. One way to regulate robot behavior is to form legal contracts with their owners. The contracts might be formed, on the fly, as the robots operate in the field. --Ben http://hack-igations.blogspot.com/2008/01/robot-surveillance-contracts.html
