Thanks for the great post.
I'm starting to develop some brain-machine-interface apps. more here: http://www.singularityworld.com/brain-machine-interface-its-coding-time/

This really is amazing. Brain-machine interface has so many applications, not to mention the obvious ones like paraplegics who will be able to use their minds to control things like wheelchairs, robots, or even robotic appendages to interact with the world. Even things like controlling <a href="http://www.mobility.co.uk/adjustable-beds-c-94.html" rel="nofollow">Adujustable Beds</a> or <a href="http://www.mobility.co.uk/adjustable-beds-c-94.html"Stairlifts</a> with your mind can become amazing possibilities.

[...] “The user focuses on a point onscreen and, as the point blinks, the headset can determine at which area of the screen the user is looking. For the wheelchair interface, a laser is used to scan for obstacles and the user is given options by way of a 3-D map on the computer screen. Although the wheelchair is limited to about two processed thought-commands per minute, the route is already planned into the chair’s navigation system, so there is not much need for more intense user input.” [source] [...]

While I agree that the eventual solution will be invasive, I anticipate that there will be a LOT more resistance to it initially. I think that these non-invasive solutions will be wonderful for bridging the gap between external (current) and internal (implanted) interfaces, and will likely become the standard for a good while.
