If experts from around the world can conclude that controlled nuclear fusion is possible, why not give them a blank check and some freedom to work. Sure, 3.5 billion is a lot over their 1 billion budget, and 120 million in operating costs is huge, but YOU JUST INVESTED 50 billion in GM, and 180 billion in AIG. I'd love to see what these minds can build and do with 30...40..500 billion dollars.

Me, too enthusiastic? Hell, I thought I was the cynic of the bunch :)
Agreed we can get a little nerdy and googly-eyed over some of the science & tech we cover, and we sometimes let our imaginations run wild with where current trends could lead. That being said, we do our best to temper it with realistic & critical perspectives on the limitations of our topics. As Keith said, it's a fine balance we're constantly tweaking as the site grows.

We try hard not to be too enthusiastic, but also not to hide our excitement - sometimes we overshoot. Its something we are always aware of and working on though...you may find that we get better at this in the future. Maybe drew will have something to say on this.

But what would Eric Drexler say of this? Something along these lines perhaps? Not sure since thats not directly about this experiment, but I don't think it would differ that much... http://metamodern.com/2009/05/02/fusion-power-a-new-way-to-boil-water/

I like reading Singularity hub, sometimes the poster seems way too enthusiastic for my taste.

I'm confused about your statement that this will be "the first controlled thermonuclear reaction ever." Research fusion reactors have been fusing Hydrogen into Helium for a long time, which is what I think of as a thermonuclear reaction. The trick isn't to get controlled fusion to happen, but to get more energy out than you put in.
