Your image is certainly not a positive Pittsburgh Compound B (PiB) PET scan (positive meaning indicative of amyloid accumulation in the brain).

If it were, the indicators of Beta Amyloid would be the brightest points in the images (not the darkest as captioned). The PiB tracer binds to amyloid and thus where you see the signal is where the plaques exist.

I think your usage of "remarkably painful" and "less excruciating" to describe possible lumbar puncture pain is unfortunate. your words serve only to mislead and frighten those who might need the procedure. In skilled hands, with the use of the same local anesthesia used by dentists, the procedure should be uncomfortable at worst. If a person walks around for hours afterwards, perhaps a headache could develop, but with lying down, that too can be prevented.

My great aunt suffered this disease.

Of course, she ate more and more cookies and ice cream and less and less real food as she aged, and had a vitamin B12 deficiency (couldn't absorb from food)... and much of this was found out too late to really help her, just slow the progression.

I wonder if any beta-amyloid dissolving compound/enzyme could be inserted into the spinal-fluid stream to make it's way to the brain (and thus bypassing that tricky blood/brain barrier).
