sorry, but this is simply not the way it is done. have you heard of binary trees? and that's the most primitive way. you need few hundred matchings at most.

The problem isn't only the scanning time (1 sec) it's the matching process.
Unless no other information (name etc.) is supplied along with the pattern data, verification will take quite a while even assuming you have a supercomputer at your disposal, say 5 million verifications/min means on average 2.5 * 5 *10^12 max cross matches/minute assuming a match is found within the first half of the cross-patterns. Which is quite a lot of processing assuming further a print with a resolution of [500,500,5] dpi.
This math is not based on facts or statistical methods.

I would think this would be much more secure, so long as there are certain levels of access created. The public level could simply return an age, for common checks like bars. Keyboards associating your logon id's with you would simply be a potential privacy problem if the fingerprint servers broadcast location information to anyone but the police. It seems much more secure than RFID, in terms of theft. At least it's not telling everyone within 100 feet who you are. If you don't want to be followed wear gloves and carry cash :D

Did the 3D finger work? I can't imagine ballistics gel has the resolution for an accurate fingerprint. And all it would take to defeat such a cheat is a heat sensor or a camera that measures transparency.
