One advantage of building a humanoid robot for space is so the robot can use the same hallways, doorknobs, tools, airlocks, etc as the astronauts. Leveraging all the expertise, time and money that was spent for humans makes some sense.

Very impressive. Robots achieving human form have really come a long way. I'm not so sure that developing humanlike robots makes a lot of sense in automotive, or space exploration. My sense is that task appropriate designs are more appropriate. As an example, I wouldn't expect that an machine to perform tasks underwater would have anything like a human form. It is important that human-like like robotics continue to evolve. The mechanics will be the easy part, integrating vision and other senses with the speed of human though and actions will be quite a challenge. It will be interesting to see how it evolves in my lifetime.

I have a jaundiced view of NASA. This robot may be more for publicity and/or to garner funds than for any real use.
