The Argus project looks promising. I have scarred retinas due to my mother having German Measles when she was pregnant with me.

I am 67 years old. I have sight in my left eye(20/100) and my right eye is 20?200 plus. I'm hoping in my lifetime that there is a possibility that I could have stromg enough vision to drive again. That would give my independance back.

There's still quite some way to go before we reach the equivalent of 5 million cones and 90 million rods in pixels at this rate.

We have optogenetics right around the corner though, which show a fair bit of promise when it comes to both sight and neural interfacing, in addition to reducing the need for surgery and electrodes.

By 2020, the only drawback of blindness will be seeing the bill for you new eyes.
