Luke Carver is a PhD candidate based at the University of Kent (UK) in the School of Arts. His current thesis, entitled ‘Riparian Being: The Philosophy and Aesthetics of Immersion, Ecstasy, and Escape’ explores the genealogy of immersion and immersive experience and its relationship to the cultivation of ‘distanced’ post-enlightenment Cartesian subjects. Furthermore, the thesis also examines why we as humans may be particularly drawn to immersive experiences, and what artistic and social potential these experiences may yield.
