I am an historian of the US South and also an historian of the senses (smell, touch, taste, sound, as well as of sight). I have written a dozen books on the history of race, slavery, time-consciousness, environmental disasters, and sensory history. My work has been featured in the Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, the London Time, the Washington Post, Slate, and many other popular outlets. I am a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.
