Toby Tyrrell

Toby Tyrrell is professor of Earth system science at the National Oceanography Centre Southampton, University of Southampton. He specializes in biogeochemical cycles. His research interests include: How organisms interact with their environments Ocean biogeochemistry, both modern and through Earth history Ocean chemical changes during extreme events in Earth’s ancient past (for instance at the E/O and K/T boundaries) Marine cycles of N, P, C, Si Ecology of phytoplankton, particularly coccolithophores Ocean acidification Controls on biogenic element distributions in the sea, whether from ecological competition between phytoplankton functional groups or from other causes How Earth stayed habitable for 3 billion years
